JSC RPC "BARL" participates in the Archipelago 2024 Design and Educational Workshop

JSC RPC "BARL" took part in the Archipelago 2024 Design and Educational Workshop.

The Archipelago 2024 event, organized by the National Technology Initiative (NTI) Foundation, took place in Sakhalin from July 8 to July 21. It brought together leading universities, space and UAV private companies as well as the representatives of the NTI Foundation and related sectors engaged in the data transmission security.

The work at the forum was mainly carried out through technological laboratories to elaborate projects for the development of advanced systems and services based on low-orbit satellite constellations, drones and artificial intelligence.

Three laboratories were involved in Earth remote sensing:

Stratospheric level of a digital sky architecture (high-altitude platforms). Development of requirements for the prospective design of stratospheric drones equipped with onboard AI to ensure stable communication, navigation and Earth remote sensing at an altitude of 20 km (strategic reserves and a backup for satellite constellations). Participants of the laboratory: the Siberian State University of Science and Technology named after the member of the Academy M. Reshetnyov.
ERS systems and services in the unified "seamless" digital sky architecture. Assessment of prospects for the development of private space companies within the framework of the "seamless" digital sky architecture, making up a list of projects on advanced space systems and ERS services to be realized up to 2030. Participants: NTI Foundation, BARL, MT-LAB, MIPT.
Promising satellite constellations and end-to-end technologies for space systems. Formation of end-to-end technological solutions to be implemented up to 2030 in the field of spacecraft platforms and components, ground infrastructure, launch vehicles, software systems for SC data transmission and processing. Participants: NTI Foundation, MIPT.

Director General of JSC RPC “BARL” Participates in SPIEF 2024

June 7, 2024, the Director General of JSC RPC “BARL” Sergey Baskov took part in a meeting of the Council of the Northern Sea Route Navigation Stakeholders, which was held within the framework of the 27th St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF).

In the course of the meeting, Sergey Baskov made a presentation on functional capabilities of the multi-payload Earth remote sensing space system, which makes it possible to simultaneously acquire data in various spectrum bands for the same area of the Earth's surface, thus significantly increasing the informational value and worth of the resulting product.

The participants of the meeting were invited to consider a possibility of obtaining space data and space data-based services in order to facilitate a prompt update of ice conditions maps and optimization of ship routes.

JSC RPC “BARL” - participant of the Kazan Digital Week 2023 international forum

From September 20 to September 22, Kazan is hosting the Kazan Digital Week 2023 international forum, an event aimed at promoting the exchange of scientific and technical information and business cooperation between manufacturers and users of high-tech products.

On September 20, JSC RPC “BARL” took part in the round table organized by Gazprom AIT Facility LLC within the framework of the forum, which was dedicated to advanced space systems and Earth observation services. The participants of the event were invited to discuss the issues of using aerospace systems and services to solve problems in the activities of oil and gas, agrarian, construction and other industries, as well as the prospects of interaction between space industry enterprises and users.

Valery Labutin, General Designer of the company, during his speech shared the experience of JSC RPC “BARL” in creation of space Earth observation systems and provision of various services based on Earth observation data. Geoinformation services developed by the company allow monitoring of agricultural lands, emergency situations, environmental monitoring, as well as control over construction of facilities.

Participation of JSC RPC “BARL” in the VIII Eastern Economic Forum

On September 11, 2023, JSC RPC “BARL” took part in the “Logistics of Change” session within the framework of the VIII Eastern Economic Forum. During the session of the Council of the Northern Sea Route Shipping Participants, the company Director General Sergey M. Baskov made a report on the functional parameters of the multi-payload Earth observation space system, created under the agreement with the Government of the Russian Federation. The EOS-R space system is designed for effective all-weather and round-the-clock monitoring of the Earth's surface and allows obtaining necessary information about the Arctic zone of the Russian Federation.

Regular monitoring of the Northern Sea Route ensures prompt and accurate determination of optimal shipping routes on the basis of integrated space data on ice conditions, meteorological conditions and other factors affecting the safety and passability of vessels. Using complex intellectual processing of space data, JSC RPC “BARL” develops products and services for analyzing ice conditions in the interests of monitoring the Northern Sea Route.

The meeting participants were invited to consider the possibility of concluding a forward contract for the purchase of space data and services based on them in order to promptly update ice maps and optimize ship routes.

Special Representative of the President visited JSC RPC “BARL”

Dmitry Peskov got familiarized with and highly appreciated the technical solutions and experience of JSC RPC “BARL” in creating Earth remote sensing space systems, discussed advanced technologies in the space industry, including those related to the means of launching spacecraft into orbit.

In order to achieve technological leadership and technological sovereignty of the Russian Federation, the National Technology Initiative Foundation ensures the promotion of advanced technological projects.

Dmitry Peskov, Special Representative of the President of the Russian Federation on Digital and Technological Development and General Director, Platform of the National Technology Initiative, visited the Moscow office of JSC RPC “BARL”.

The Director General of JSC RPC “BARL” Sergey Baskov noted the importance of creating domestic commercial Earth remote sensing systems and the variety of applications for satellite imagery data, ranging from precision farming and effective insurance to monitoring greenhouse gas emissions.

High-speed downlink on the move

JSC RPC "BARL" continues to expand its own product line. The rotary support device for tracking antenna systems developed and manufactured by our company based on a parallel hexapod-type manipulator has a number of significant advantages over the classic three-axis rotary support devices:

- small mass of the rotary support device (no more than 200 kg.) allows mounting antenna systems on the roofs of buildings without special engineering work;

- universal character of the antenna system mirror. With the same support device, the diameter of a mirror made of composite materials can be from 0.5 to 4.5 meters;

- high pointing accuracy (dynamic pointing error less than 7 arc minutes), which allows dynamic pointing of a mirror with a diameter of 4.5 m in the Ka-band with losses of less than 1 dB;

- the ability to carry out full-fledged auto-tracking due to the kinematics of the rotary device;

- increased reliability. Linear actuators are designed for years of continuous operation with minimal maintenance;

- fast recovery. Replacement of the linear actuator from the spare parts kit can be carried out in 10 minutes.

Today we are ready to offer our Customers and Partners a new option. Now the tracking antenna system can provide stable communication not only in static mode. The rotary support device with an antenna system placed on a ship is capable of providing high-precision pointing in conditions of sea motion, this became possible due to the use of another advantage of the parallel hexapod-type manipulator.

“BARL” has developed an algorithm for detecting oil spills in various natural areas

Identifying oil slicks on the water surface using radar images has never been a hard task, but identifying an accident on the ground is much more difficult.

“BARL” specialists have developed and tested an algorithm that, using a set of Earth observation data obtained in the visible, infrared, and radio ranges, makes it possible to detect oil spills in various natural ecosystems. After the discovery of an accident, an assessment of the main parameters (area, reliability, etc.) is carried out, and then monitoring of the spread of the oil slick and work on the reclamation of the contaminated area is carried out.

The proposed method was tested on archival data and showed high reliability. During its development, “BARL” specialists used the latest machine learning technologies.

This algorithm has already been implemented in the company's geoportal. The user only needs to choose a territory for analysis, and the selection of data, their analysis, the creation of a report, and alarm signals will be done by the geoportal. Data is accessed through an Internet browser from any device with Internet access, so there is no need to install any third-party software and high processing power is not required.

“BARL” completed ground tests and patented the adaptive modulation technology as part of the ERS space system.

To date, in Earth remote sensing systems, due to a significant increase in the volume of mission data received by imaging equipment, the problem of increasing the speed of data downlink from an ERS spacecraft to ground stations is quite acute.
JSC RPC “BARL” has developed and tested a unique technology of adaptive signal modulation in order to increase the speed of data downlink from ERS spacecraft to ground stations. The use of this technology makes it possible to increase the amount of data downlinked from ERS spacecraft by 1.5 times compared to the use of technologies with fixed modulation.

“BARL” is introducing neural networks into data processing.

JSC RPC “BARL” continues to work on developing machine learning and computer vision technologies. One of the topical areas is the study of the possibilities of using neural networks for image segmentation. “BARL” specialists have successfully tested the Mask-RCNN neural network, with the help of which about 2000 categorized images were analyzed. Some of them were used for training, while others were used to control the reliability of the results of the network operation. The results obtained allow us to assert: the Mask-RCNN neural network has a high potential for decoding images with an accuracy of more than 85%.

The U-Net neural network is planned to be tested in the nearest future, as well as additional image processing algorithms. The data received will be analyzed to select the most optimal solutions.

Government Award

The staff of JSC RPC “BARL”, represented by Sergey Baskov, its Director General, received an award from the Government of the Russian Federation for the development and creation of new space systems. The products manufactured by the Company are recognized as extremely important for the sustainable development of Russia in a number of areas.

“The research submitted for the award demonstrates the enormous potential of the Russian science. These are all discoveries on a global scale. Such developments are currently in demand not only in Russia, but throughout the world. The possibilities of their practical use are the widest. And it is especially important that they are already in use today”, – Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin said at the awards ceremony.

Legal Framework for Private Space Activities

Private space services have become a new sector of the Russian economy. The Federation Council Committee on Economic Policy is working to consolidate it in the current legislation - this was discussed at the meeting of the Committee dedicated to the mechanisms of state support for exports in Africa.

The meeting was held through videoconference. It was attended by Sergey Baskov, BARL’s Director General. As he mentioned, the economic potential and security of any state directly depend on the introduction of high technologies. At the same time, the share of the Russian Federation in the commercial satellite industry today is less than 1.5%, despite a large number of developments. One of the main reasons for Russia’s lagging behind in commercial space is the lack of legislation that would regulate the export of space systems manufactured by private companies. Eight departments are simultaneously responsible for state expertise in this area, there is no single approach to the examination of exported goods and technologies and the transparency of making a refusal decision. This, according to Sergey Baskov, means that today issuance of a license takes more than 4 months.

That is why the top management of “BARL” suggested an upgrade of legislation in terms of the state-private partnership in the area of space activities – in particular, by introducing the term “entrepreneurial space activities” into it. Another suggestion was to simplify the procedure of subsidized credit financing and to work out a system of risk insurance in this industry.

These measures, “BARL” is sure, will make Russia much more competitive in the market of space technologies and will stimulate business development in this area. By estimates of “BARL”, an upgrade of legislation in terms of the state-private partnership would allow increasing Russia’s share in the world space industry up to 15% within the next 10 years.

Neural Network Processing of EO Data

The demand for Earth Observation (EO) data is growing every year. Today it is a vital element for many areas of human activity: mapping, environmental monitoring, infrastructure development control, natural resource management, etc.

Creation of geographic information systems based on it not only facilitates access to various kinds of data, but also directly affects the world economic processes.

Today EO is one of the fastest growing technological areas. The world orbital constellation of EO satellites over the past 5 years has increased several times - there are already more than 400 civilian EO satellites of various classes and types in orbit.

However, the rapid growth of the EO market has led to the same rapid increase in the amount of data, and its processing using classical methods is no longer possible. This pushes the leading EO operators to search for new solutions. Today, companies like Maxar and Planet are actively using machine learning in addition to cloud technologies for processing spatial data.

"BARL" is working in this direction as well. Over the past decade, the company has put on the market a number of unique solutions in the field of receiving, processing and interpreting data. One of the current tasks is the development of hardware and software systems for stream processing of EO data and its further analysis using neural networks.

For these purposes, “BARL” has developed a complex that, with the help of neural network algorithms, is capable of processing large data streams in near-real-time mode. Special Russian-made accelerators are employed as a hardware solution.

The complex is used for intelligent processing of space images to improve their quality, integration of space images obtained in various ranges of the electromagnetic spectrum (visible, infrared, radar), segmentation, recognition and classification of various objects. It was successfully tested for solving tasks in agriculture and forestry, as well as for classifying ice and building optimal routes for vessels with regard to ice conditions.

These technical solutions were presented to Dmitry Rogozin, Director General of ROSCOSMOS, during his visit on October 07.

Visit of ROSCOSMOS Director

Dmitry Rogozin, Director General of ROSCOSMOS, visited the Moscow office of “BARL” on October 7. The head of the State Space Corporation saw the demonstration of “BARL” game-changing developments in the area of Earth observation data processing making benefit of neural network.

Other objects of demonstration were state-of-the-art hardware and software solutions for visualization and delivery of information to end users.

During the visit, the directors of “BARL” and ROSCOSMOS discussed the need to develop state and private partnership in the area of developing modern Earth observation space systems for handling the tasks of the ministries and agencies of the Russian Federation.

BARL presented its products at RIF-2019

On February 14, the Russian Investment Forum was opened in Sochi, bringing together over 3000 participants. At the Tver stand, Igor Rudenya, Tver Region Governor, presented the developments of RPC “BARL” to Dmitry Medvedev, Prime Minister. One of its divisions is located in Tver, where the company is planning to expand its manufacturing capacities in the nearest future.

The forum has also become the platform for the first show of the Russian Arctic Zone monitoring space system based on small Earth Remote Sensing radar satellites to the country’s top- ranking officials.

“For many years Tver has been concentrating the intellectual part of our company: designers, software engineers, microelectronics specialists, and now we are ready for a more serious expansion opening the manufacturing facilities in the Tver Region”, - noted Valery Labutin, Chief Designer of RPC “BARL”.

This project will be the first to be accommodated by the Emmaus Technopark currently under creation. In 2021 “BARL” will be launching the high-resolution camera for Earth Remote Sensing satellites, a Russian innovative development in this area, built by the Tver branch of the company.

A satellite with such camera can be used for a number of tasks in the area of agriculture and forestry, urban planning and monitoring of hard-to-reach regions.

The new manufacturing facilities in the Tver Region will additionally create 200 jobs for highly qualified specialists.

On September 13-14, 2018, the 11^th Summit on Earth Observation Business organized by the “Euroconsult” consulting agency and devoted to business in the field of Earth Remote Sensing (ERS), took place. About 250 representatives of the leading companies from 50 countries of the world gathered in the capital of France to discuss current state of commercial application of the ERS and to shape the future industry development. Within the frameworks of the Conference, representatives of RPC “BARL” held a number of meetings with international partners and reached agreements on cooperation with many of them.

Mobile application FIKSES.Expert

FIKSES software package is supplemented with a mobile application that will greatly facilitate the work of insurers. With the help of this program, insurance companies can obtain the most relevant information about the insurance object.

Quite often it is not enough to have satellite images to assess the state of farmland - damage can be too local in nature or of unknown origin.

The mobile application allows the insurer sending a request for a detailed study of the field of interest. Having received the request, the expert is sent to the site, which prepares a detailed report and publishes it in the same application. Not only text but also photos and video of the areas of interest can be included by the expert in the document. Thus, FIKSES provides the insurers not only with a large-scale imagery from remote sensing satellites, but also with the capability to examine the insurance object in great detail and to estimate potential risks.

FIKSES 2.0

A new version of the software package for the system of insurance management in the field of agribusiness (FIKSES) was released. The “BARL” company carried out an in-depth upgrade of the program: its stability and interface were improved, as well as a number of convenient and useful solutions were implemented.

First of all, the capability of analyzing the selected region, particularly, comparing different fields, tracking changes in the state of a particular field over several years and comparing vegetation indices with meteorological data was provided.

Also the ability to save all the information and analytics of interest into a separate document (summary) that can be printed and used for further work was added.

Software update

We are glad to inform you on the release of a new version of software package BARL for the units for receiving, processing and remote sensing data delivery.

Task planning and control module

In the updated software we tried to take into account all requests of our users. We improved interface and made it more convenient and intuitive. Many processes, which previously had to be performed manually, were automated. Ergonomics of the software package was improved in whole.

The software allows carrying out a full cycle of works related to Earth remote sensing, such as task planning, antenna control, systems and demodulators, data processing, storage and delivery. All these works are performed with help of interconnected program modules and common interface.

Our developers are continuously working on improvement of the software and striving to make BARL products available to the greater number of users.

MAKS-2017

BARL Research & Production Company participated in the International Aviation and Space Salon MAKS-2017, which was held in Zhukovskiy city from July 18 to 23, 2017.

Stand of the company was situated in D2 exhibition hall. The latest developments of ground complexes of reception and processing the data transmitted from Earth Remote Sensing (ERS) satellites were presented at the stand. Besides, the visitors of the exhibition were provided with opportunity to see the examples of application of ERS data along with meteorological, statistical and cartographic information to solve the issues in the field of agricultural insurance. The model of the ultra-small electro-optical complex providing ultra-high spatial resolution was demonstrated as well.

6th Central Russian Economic Forum

On June 16 - 17, 2017, the 6th Central Russian Economic Forum took place in Kursk city. More than 2000 representatives from 22 regions of the Russian Federation and 39 foreign countries participated in the Forum.

Traditionally, the most topical issues related to the current economic reality are being discussed at this event. The main theme of the Central Russian Economic Forum in 2017 is “Modern Economy in Digital Environment”.

Within the framework of the forum, the off-site section: “Main directions and opportunities for use of space activities results to support the decision-making on the social and economic development of Russian regions. Prospects of formation of common information environment for use of geospatial and other data in the Russian Federation. Pilot projects ". Employees of BARL Research & Production Company presented the report on the theme: “System of Agricultural Land Space Monitoring and Effective Insurance Management in the Field of Agriculture”. The report aroused interest of the audience and was positively appraised by the participants of the section.

5th International Scientific and Practical Conference

On May 25, 2017 in the Joint Company “Research and Production Corporation “Space Monitoring Systems, Information & Control and Electromechanical Complexes” named after A.G. Iosifian” the 5th International Scientific and Practical Conference “Actual Problems of ERS Satellite Systems Development” was held. More than 178 managers and specialists from 59 Russian regions, 8 foreign rocket and space industry enterprises and organizations from Germany, United Kingdom, France, Belarus, Kazakhstan etc., as well as representatives of organizations consuming the satellite data took part in the conference.

At the Plenary session Director General of BARL Research & Production Company Sergey Baskov made a report on the theme “High-periodic Satellite Earth Remote Sensing (ERS) Systems for Solving Agricultural and Cartographic Problems”. Besides, in the course of the plenary session main issues related to the development and use of ERS were discussed. Further the work of the conference continued within 6 parallel sessions, at which about 100 reports was made (including the poster presentations).

The USSR Cosmonaut. Leonov Project

In the beginning of March, 2017, on the day preceding Yuri Gagarin's birthday, enthusiasts from Ryazan Alexey Busarov, Ilya Sterlyukin and Oleg Butskiy made a picture on the snow in the Ryazan Region called The USSR Cosmonaut, which appeared to be a copy of a painting by pilot-cosmonaut Alexey Leonov.

The size of the picture is about 450 X 250 meters, the total length of all the picture’s lines is 8.5 km.

The work is dedicated to three ‘space’ jubilees of 2017: 110th anniversary of the birth of Sergey P. Korolev, 160th anniversary of the birth of Konstantin E. Tsiolkovsky and 60th anniversary of the first artificial satellite launch by the USSR.

The picture was outlined with the help of navigation equipment and then delineated on skis. The project team engaged volunteers responded to a post in social networks.

With administrative support of Vostok.One Projective Association and with assistance from the State Duma member D.B. Kravchenko, BARL specialists placed a tasking order of this area with DigitalGlobe.
